Future goals: Make “To” statements…like To acquire a high school diploma, to graduate with honors, to become FFA President my senior year, and to be accepted into the DVM Pre-Med Program at Virginia Tech. [Sentence fragments errors are conventional format throughout.]

Current and past employment: List the jobs you’ve had…not just places like Applebee’s, but name your job title, like server…and tell types of duties you performed if not self-evident in job title.  Don’t worry about dates and addresses. Also include jobs you receive no payment for. Include jobs you only did once. Don’t forget jobs like Vacation Bible School Pre-K Counselor or installing high-tensile cattle fencing.

Awards, certifications, and accolades: First list everything you received a trophy, award, certificate for like FFA Treasurer—Greenbrier East Chapter, CPR card, WV State Fair Blue Ribbon Barrel Racing—Junior Girls, Izaak Walton League’s Stream Watchers Certificate, then list/name items that have no corresponding artifacts, like Best Haiku poem in Mr. Mullens' 8th grade third period class.

Technology skills: List everything from software you know, like Proficient with MS Excel and Adobe PageMaker, to GPS, diagnostic tools, automotive electronics, science class probes and anything that requires electricity and/or a manual to operate. Can install a stick of RAM and similar computer hardware components.  Maintatin two Webpages. [Frowned upon to list computer games you’ve mastered.]

Inside skills: List tasks you can perform inside that don’t involve technology, like infant child-care, Thai food preparation, restroom cleaning.

Outside skills: Have a WV Class B driver’s license, can operate a forklift, Catepillar D9 Earthmover, and a John Deere 9770 STS combine. Skilled horse rider. Skilled in all types of lawn maintenance equipment and firewood gathering machinery.

Classes and courses that enhance my future goals: Spanish III Honors, Accounting II, AP Biology II, Chemistry II, desktop publishing,

anatomy-physiology. [Place in order of what you consider most important.]

Current and past extracurricular activities: Boy Scouts since grade 3, organized mud-bogging racer, high school football—right tackle GEHS, poetry writing, song writing, banjo playing. [It’s surprising how you can be awarded a job or scholarship based mostly upon a shared interest you have with the person reading your resume.]

Interesting facts about me: I can shoot out the eye of a squirrel with a .22 rifle while bare-back riding an Appaloosa stallion. Nine teachers have told me I am going to become President of the United States.

References: List names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of people who will say good things about you. Best if you have a former boss, a teacher/principal/counselor/coach, etc. Tell their relationship to you, like Mr. Barry Rich, former English teacher, nunyabizness@zmail.com. [Frowned upon if you list family members.]
